Baby Business Booming Due to Economic Hardships
suntimes.com — Egg donors make about $7,000 and are allowed to donate up to six times; Surrogates make as much as $30,000. Some Chicago area fertility clinics say they've seen a surge in women inquiring about becoming egg donors or surrogates for infertile couples, apparently because of the recent economic downturn.

- bleutranquille, on 08/01/2008, -2/+13ew.
- greenlight2001, on 08/02/2008, -0/+7What are you doing wasting it?! Save it in a mason jar!
- Devotia, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3My mason jars are already filled with urine. Surely you don't want them to get mixed up!
- Khevenhuller, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1"Baby-batter?" You've been watching "Horrible People" on MyDamnChannel on YouTube, haven't you?
- disappointment, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2No one watches that crap on YouTube.
However, the word "Baby-Batter" was used in the movie "There's Something About Mary" - Khevenhuller, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Good to know. And while I agree YouTube is often crap, you should check out that particular show because it's an exception.. It's professionally made by an MTV executive and it's a hilarious soap opera parody.
- disappointment, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2No one watches that crap on YouTube.
- louiebaur, on 08/01/2008, -1/+18What a business!
- AmyVernon, on 08/01/2008, -1/+22I've heard that it's pretty painful, too, to donate eggs. It's not like they just reach in and snatch a couple out. And, having had two children myself, nine months of being pregnant with someone else's child is not gonna be fun. People need better reasons than just money to do this.
- hollyminkowski, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2I think it would be painful...in several ways.
How can a woman treat a child like a product to be sold?
It's just a horrible idea... babies are the most precious things in the world...how could I ever sell one? There just isn't enough money to get me to do such a thing.- danielwsmithee, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3I don't think most people who do it think about the baby as a product. They think about the wonderful couple they are helping have a spawn, that couldn't otherwise. If you look at current adoption fees this amount of money isn't surprising.
- hollyminkowski, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2I think it would be painful...in several ways.
- UniqueJewelry, on 08/01/2008, -1/+20sadly money is the only reason.

- Wilbur666, on 08/01/2008, -0/+15Money makes the world go round. Cue the insane development of Dubai.
- stagmire, on 08/02/2008, -7/+3Nice way for your girlfriend/wife to make some money on the side with the added benefit of having bigger ***** due to pregnancy.
- dreicher, on 08/02/2008, -3/+18"Stephanie, a 24-year-old bartender who works two jobs, said she applied to be an egg donor two months ago because she needed money for college and didn't want to take out loans."
Isn't that what stripping is for? - David513, on 08/02/2008, -2/+12Why the heck do they refer to "egg donors"? Selling something is NOT a "donation." It's egg sales. I don't have a problem with it, but I have a real problem with pretending that it's something it's not.
- Culat, on 08/02/2008, -2/+7Because in the US it is illegal to sell your eggs. They are compensated for their time, not the eggs.
- David513, on 08/02/2008, -4/+4That's a legal fiction. They're selling eggs. Period.
- danielwsmithee, on 08/02/2008, -2/+3Same thing with "donating" plasma.
- dianebl, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2They're also being compensated for the risk they are taking - egg donation involves massive amounts of hormones, the risk of multiple-fetus pregnancy, and many potential complications.
- Culat, on 08/02/2008, -2/+7Because in the US it is illegal to sell your eggs. They are compensated for their time, not the eggs.
- gdehms, on 08/02/2008, -1/+3Baby boomer business.. baby business booming.. booming business babying. Alliteration = favorite literary device.
- WiseAcre, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1That's some amazing alliteration!
- reverland, on 08/02/2008, -1/+5They were talking about this on a radio show I listen to. It sounded brutal, you had to give yourself shots all the time and you had to go in for surgery to get the eggs out where they used a type of vacuum to pull the eggs out. The woman described it as intense pressure from her ovaries on a daily basis. There is no joy in this process, it sounded like a hard way to make money. More power to you if you want to put up with the mood swings and hormones.
- serendipitously, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2If anyone has had IVF they would know that even 20 cycles over 15 years is not physically painful compared to the emotional pain and financial burden of ending up with nothing, being screened out for adoption because there is none in your country, and you aren't financially wealthy enough, and never having the joy of having children.
- aceisstupid, on 08/02/2008, -2/+1I've wanted to be an egg donor for a long time...I just don't want to have a baby (see Cracked article).
- antechinus, on 08/02/2008, -1/+3If they are donating eggs why are they being paid?
- serendipitously, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1IN some countries where only altruistic donation is allowed, women won't donate eggs. The number of donations that occur every day is miniscule, and it is usually a little sister.
- nastronomical, on 08/02/2008, -7/+2This sounds like utter ***** and an excuse. yeah "economic" hard times = daddy wont pay for your boob job, bmw and so on...
- noseeme, on 08/02/2008, -2/+2DNA pudding futures are way down. SELL, SELL, SELL!!!
- DeFex, on 08/02/2008, -3/+3they dont want to spoil their bodies. let the serfs do it for them.

- inyearstocome, on 08/02/2008, -3/+2Gotta love us fighting nature... infertile people are infertile for a reason. Sure it sucks and there are some people who cant have a child but would make good parents, but boo hoo. Adopt, babysit, and stop whining.
The wealthy spend money to make more children, while the poor pop them out like bunnies, when they clearly cant support them.
If only the world could be educated in common sense... the lack thereof being the unifying factor between the classes.- serendipitously, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3Tell me how easy it is to adopt on a country by country basis.
- theutopian, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Eugenics are wrong.
If the technology exists for infertile couples to have children, then they are 'more evolved' than idiots who poop out babies on command.
- paulhendrixson, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2An alignment of atypical alliteration appears!
- hollyminkowski, on 08/02/2008, -0/+3I might be persuaded to donate an egg to a relative..but to a total stranger? No effin way. It would be having a child out there somewhere in the world and never knowing what happened to it...just too creepy and painful for words to express. :-(
A while back I took care of my cousins baby for a few months while she was recuperating from an accident...when I had to give her up I had a really hard time with it... no way I could be a surrogate mom :-(- synystar, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1I can see how it might be worse from that perspective. But I was adopted and I know that I have living relatives in proximity to where I live today. I've haven't met them and I'm not sure if I ever will. I'm curious...but it's not painful. I wonder if my biological parents are concerned about me.
- SmokinWeed, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Can I donate some eggs I "found"?
- wassim2k, on 08/02/2008, -0/+2Haven't these people heard of adoption?
- theutopian, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Adoption is sometimes way more expensive and difficult to go through than the medical route.
I would have no problem adopting a child but let's face it, there's nothing like your own flesh and flood.- jcorn1, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1flesh and flood? Lol.
- theutopian, on 08/02/2008, -0/+1Adoption is sometimes way more expensive and difficult to go through than the medical route.
- jcorn1, on 08/03/2008, -0/+1It can be life-threatening although some mistakenly believe it is risk free. They have to monitor the administration of the drugs given to help stimulate egg production carefully. Yeah, I know eggs are produced naturally but they seem to use drugs to get the optimum number or something.
