time.com — The number of Americans infected by the AIDS virus each year is much higher than the government has been estimating, U.S. health officials reported Sunday, acknowledging that their numbers have understated the level of the epidemic.

The total money the federal, state, and city governments spend on social security, pensions, healthcare, welfare, and other social services dwarf what we spend on war and defense including the war on terror. If you're young, I don't fault you because you are naive and don't know much about the world. Why don't you stop listening to your hippie college professors and join the real world? But if you're an educated adult you should be ashamed of yourself.

        Well, great, then we could at least cut half our losses on two wars we won't win, at least in the way we're doing it. The war on drugs and the war on terror are a huge waste of taxpayers dollars when they cold be going to more of what you just said.

      No doubt someone will say greedy corporations. OK, so what do the corporations do with it? Destroy it? Bury it? You get my point.

      The money spent on war goes to the military personal fighting the war. It goes to corporations who pay their employees (Usually Americans) for their time and efforts. The profits go to 401k plans for Americans. The money, is all cases, goes back to the American people one way or another. There used to be a time when the libs always said the Republicans need a war time economy (a good economy) in order for their economic principles to succeed. Now, suddenly, a wartime economy produces recession.

      Also I am tired of hearing that if we throw enough money at a problem we will fix it. If you want to reduce AIDS simply don't let anyone you don't know stick their pee pee in you. Simple, AIDS infections reduced.

Now the taxpayer doesn't have his money, but the military has a bomb. But wait a second, a bomb is build to blow ***** up, perhaps a bridge in Iraq (or people, but Iraqis are brown, thus irrelevant to the discussion). As part of the reconstruction of Iraq, the US Government pays a different politically connected company to rebuild the bridge with more money taken from the some taxpayers.

        Thus we start with the situation of taxpayers having money to spend or invest on whatever they think is in their best interest and a bridge in Iraq, and we end up with the same taxpayers not having that money, a somewhat more shinny bridge in Iraq (that most likely provides for the same utility as the now blow'd up bridge, just with a period of time where there was no bridge), maybe some dead brown people (obviously not important to the discussion because Zarchon's version of war people don't die), the resources used to make the bomb (the material and energy could have made something useful instead of a bomb), and politically connected companies now have the taxpayer's money.

      AIDS can be transmitted by:
      Vaginal Sex
      Oral Sex (small chance though)
      Anal Sex
      Shared needles (between drug injecting users)
      Blood transfusions
      Blood products
      Mother to child transmission (before or during birth, or during breast-feeding)
      Infection in healthcare settings
      Tattoos and piecing.

      • craterburnsu, on 08/03/2008, -4/+7If you are circumcised and having vaginal sex the male has a surprisingly low chance of getting it. The female on the other hand is pretty much guaranteed if the male has it. If you use a condom you are mostly good to go as well.

        As far as tattoos and piercings go, go to a reputable source and they won't be reusing needles. No worries there. You can see them take the needles out of the sealed plastic packages before having anything done.

    It doesn't matter what your sexual preference is. If you don't go on a mission to bang your entire city your chances of catching aids is pretty slim. More likely you'll die from getting hit by a car first. The scare factor in AIDS played out in the '80, thank you.

        Don't spread fud - if one person believed your ***** 5 in 10000 (that's off by a factor of TEN), and went ahead with intercourse with some HIV+, that person has a good chance of losing their life due to misinformation.

        Not saying the odds are as low as 1 in 2000 like SwedishNinja says, but it probably isn't as high as 1 in 200 either.

        So, 1.1 / 300 million is not valid. In fact, looking at it this way the odds your partner is HIV+ may be worse than the 1:200 suggested above.

So more people are careless when they have sex and contract HIV and other STDs. Protect yourself and use a condom if you're going to have sex people! Don't think you're invincible.

Face it, they're call Sexually Transmitted for a reason. That's the sad truth if we don't find a cure or vaccination.

      There are also huge racial disparities. Blacks are most susceptible to the disease, and that is why it literally has spread like wildfire in Africa. Part of the reason the US has underestimated the infection rate is because of an irrational attempt to apply egalitarian fantasy to science. In essence, the reason the HIV count was not accurate was because they used infection rates more specific to white population groups to the entirety of the US population.

      When the racial difference in infection rate were finally analyzed, it became obvious that the infection rate amongst blacks in the US is similar to black population groups elsewhere in the world: that is to say, high.

Geez, we've hyped sex ed for 25 years, and during those 25 years all the infection/preg. rates went UP. It wasn't until abstinence ed came along that we started seeing changes. Coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. It's the action that is the problem. Knowing and doing are two different things. And by that I mean that only about half the folks use condoms consistently and correctly. If you're not consistent (100%) and correct (Follow all 6-7 steps), then you don't get the 50% risk reduction (85% for HIV) that they can offer. Yeah that's right, 50%. Fortunately, HIV is HARD to get via vaginal sex, otherwise, you'd playing Russian Roulette. No scare tactics. Just reality. Want to avoid a Sexually Transmitted disease? Just listen to it's name. Want sex? Find someONE, fall in love, love only them, treat them like the world revolves around them and you'll have the MOST sex, the Best sex, and the SAFEST sex you can have. In fact, have all you want and the worst that happens is your exhausted! The best is you're pleasured beyound belief.

    Cancer affects way more people, and doesn't require situational means to get it.

    Outside of being born with HIV/AIDS, the chances of getting it involuntarily are very, very low. Blood transfusions? I'd like to see a % that were infected by those means.

    And let's face it, as soon as we find a cure for HIV/AIDS (or reduce it from a fatal situation to something more of a nuisance), there will be a new STD to take its place.

    This article is stating that testing and statistical methods have become more refined. Although the threat of AIDS is still very real, hopefully "better blood test and new statistical methods" will give an edge on prevention, treatment and vaccination.

    If you don't know if you are infected, get tested immediately!

    Aids is not caused by HIV - aids is the name for a number of diseases that is caused by a killed immune system. Most of the deaths from aids in the USA is from a nasty drug called AZT that destroys organs and even your bones. Check out that pod cast for more info.

Magic Johnson is almost 20 years since diagnosis and he's still very healthy. It is however, VERY dependent on lifestyle, and whether or not some other disease like cancer gets its hooks into you as a result of your compromised immune system.
